COM 130 Nonverbal Communication Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course introduces the contemporary study of nonverbal communication in daily life. Topics include haptics, kinesics, proxemics, facial displays, and appearance. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze/interpret nonverbal communication and demonstrate greater awareness of their own nonverbal communication habits.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.
Pre-requisite(s): COM 110 or COM 120. Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Determine what constitutes effective nonverbal sending and receiving of signals.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of environment upon human communication.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of territory and personal space on human communication.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of physical characteristics on human communication.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of gestures and posture on human communication.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of touch on human communication.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of the face on human communication.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of eye behavior on human communication.
- Analyze the positive and negative effects of vocal cues that accompany spoken words.
