COM 140 Introduction to Intercultural Communication Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course introduces techniques of cultural research, definitions, functions, characteristics, and impacts of cultural differences in public address. Emphasis is placed on how diverse backgrounds influence the communication act and how cultural perceptions and experiences determine how one sends and receives messages. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles and skills needed to become effective in communicating outside one’s primary culture.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Humanities/Fine Arts (Substitute).
Pre-requisite(s): DRE 097 or ENG 002 Course is typically offered in Fall. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate cultural awareness when communicating with others in a transaction.
- Distinguish among the elements that contribute to culture, subcultures, in-groups, and out-groups.
- Examine the role of technology in expanding intercultural interactions.
- Compare communication within various cultural contexts.
- Examine how enculturation shapes personal perceptions, ideology, and values.
- Analyze various aspects of cultural diversity.
