MUS 110 Music Appreciation

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course is a basic survey of the music of the Western world. Emphasis is placed on the elements of music, terminology, composers, form, and style within a historical perspective. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in basic listening and understanding of the art of music.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Humanities/Fine Arts. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course.

Pre-requisite(s): DRE 098  or ENG 002  (P2 grade)
Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Apply extensive knowledge of the music lexicon in a discussion regarding the fundamental elements of music.
  2. Aurally identify the compositions and methods of various master musicians from all periods in Western European civilization.
  3. Document the role of music in various cultures.
  4. Assess current musical and cultural direction.
  5. Engage in the music community by attending relevant musical programs.
  6. Document community musical experiences through written prose or oral presentation.
