MUS 112 Introduction to Jazz Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course introduces the origins and musical components of jazz and the contributions of its major artists. Emphasis is placed on the development of discriminating listening habits, as well as the investigation of the styles and structural forms of the jazz idiom. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in listening and understanding this form of American music.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Humanities/Fine Arts. This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course.
Pre-requisite(s): DRE 098 or ENG 002 (P2 grade) Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Identify specific styles of jazz music, based on aural examples, at a success rate of 70% or better; 10 or fewer errors.
- Characterize the distinguishing elements of each stylistic/historical period in jazz without the use of textbooks or other references, by the end of the semester.
- Document the role of jazz music in various cultures.
- Assess current jazz musical and cultural direction through written prose or oral presentation.
