OST 248 Diagnostic Coding Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course provides an in-depth study of diagnostic coding. Emphasis is placed on ICD coding system. Upon completion, students should be able to properly code diagnoses in a medical facility.
Pre-requisite(s): OST 148 and a grade of C or better in MED 121 or OST 141 . Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring. Course has transfer restrictions - 5 years
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate the use of the correct application of symbols, coding conventions and general guidelines when assigning codes, using the current edition of the ICD-10-CM.
- Employ both the Alphabetic Index and Tabular Section using the correct General and Chapter Specific Coding Guidelines using the current edition of the ICD-10-CM.
- Analyze information from medical phrases and notes using medical terminology and anatomy and physiology to recognize main diagnostic terms in order to choose the correct code, using the current edition of the ICD-10-CM.
- Score at a competent level (grade of C/70, or better), on coding assessment tests, using the current edition of the ICD-10-CM.
