SUR 111 Periop Patient Care Lecture: 5 Lab: 6 Clinic: 0 Credits: 7 This course provides the surgical technology student the theoretical knowledge required to function in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative role. Topics include asepsis, disinfection and sterilization, physical environment, instrumentation, equipment, peri-operative patient care, and peri-operative case management. Upon completion, students should be able to apply the principles and practice of the peri-operative team member to the operative environment.
Co-requisite(s): SUR 110 . Course is typically offered in Fall. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Develop a surgical conscience by incorporating principles of aseptic technique for perioperative patient care.
- Differentiate types of surgical instruments by tissue type, design, and function.
- Adhere to Association of Surgical Technology (AST) guidelines when performing a surgical scrub.
- Select surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies appropriate for the assigned surgical case.
- Demonstrate safe and accurate handling, passing, and disinfection of instruments. 6. Perform the roles of a sterile and non-sterile surgical team member.
