ART 283 Ceramics I Lecture: 0 Lab: 6 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course provides an introduction to three-dimensional design principles using the medium of clay. Emphasis is placed on fundamentals of forming, surface design, glaze application, and firing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in slab and coil construction, simple wheel forms, glaze technique, and creative expression.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Create artwork using hand building techniques for the manipulation of clay including coil, pinch, and slab.
- Create simple forms using the potter’s wheel.
- Demonstrate the application of various surface design techniques for ceramic art including glaze application.
- Maintain a comprehensive sketchbook related to ceramic art.
- Practice safe work habits that contribute to the maintenance of a clean and organized studio.
- Evaluate ceramic art through critique.
- Prepare artwork appropriately for presentation.
