HIS 221 African-American History

This course covers African-American history from the Colonial period to the present. Topics include African origins, the slave trade, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, the civil rights movement, and contributions of African Americans. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze significant political, socioeconomic, and cultural developments in the history of African Americans.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): DRE 097 or ENG 002
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Apply concepts used in the analysis of culture, intercultural contact, and relations.
Compare fifteenth and sixteenth century African culture and life with that of Europeans during the same time frame.
Describe the development of a unique African-American identity.
Analyze the unique nature of African-American music, art, literature, social, and political achievements including nature and impact of these encounters.
Evaluate the progress towards the advancement of African-Americans concerning race, gender, and class.
