AHR 110 Introduction to Refrigeration Lecture: 2 Lab: 6 Clinic: 0 Credits: 5 This course introduces the basic refrigeration process used in mechanical refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Topics include terminology, safety, and identification and function of components; refrigeration cycle; and tools and instrumentation used in mechanical refrigeration systems. Upon completion, students should be able to identify refrigeration systems and components, explain the refrigeration process, and use the tools and instrumentation of the trade.
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate safety protocols and procedures in the HVAC work environments in compliance with industry and OSHA standards.
- Use tools and instrumentation effectively to perform basic refrigeration tasks, ensuring safety and accuracy.
- Describe the theory, operating principle, and components of the refrigeration cycle in lab and written assignments.
- Demonstrate industry approved refrigeration piping connection techniques.
- Measure electrical and thermal properties using tools and instrumentation commonly used in the HVAC industry.
- Safely handle refrigerants and basic refrigeration/cooling system operation in compliance with industry and EPA regulations.
