AHR 112 Heating Technology

Lecture: 2 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4


This course covers the fundamentals of heating including oil, gas, and electric heating systems. Topics include safety, tools and instrumentation, system operating characteristics, installation techniques, efficiency testing, electrical power, and control systems. Upon completion, students should be able to explain the basic oil, gas, and electrical heating systems and describe the major components of a heating system.

 

Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate safe work practices specific to heating system tasks in accordance with OSHA standards and industry safety protocols. 
  2. Apply industry terminology to describe principles for oil, gas, and electric warm air heating systems. 
  3. Identify the major components of oil, gas, and electric heating systems.
  4. Demonstrate the proper use of tools and instruments in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of heating systems.   
  5. Identify the characteristics and applications of various energy sources used in electric and fuel-fired heating systems.   
  6. Analyze the sequence of operation, control systems, wiring, and wiring schematics of heating equipment.
  7. Determine the correct size of gas piping and venting materials for gas heating systems according to the NC Mechanical and Gas Code and manufacturers’ instructions.
