BIO 275 Microbiology

Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course covers principles of microbiology and the impact these organisms have on man and the environment. Topics include the various groups of microorganisms, their structure, physiology, genetics, microbial pathogenicity, infectious diseases, immunology, and selected practical applications. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills including microscopy, aseptic technique, staining, culture methods, and identification of microorganisms.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): Take One: BIO 111  , BIO 163  , BIO 165, or BIO 168
Course is typically offered in Fall, Spring
Course has transfer restrictions - 20 years

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Explain the evolution and diversity of microorganisms, including acellular pathogens.
  2. Describe microbial cell structures and functions.
  3. Apply aseptic techniques and safe practices during microbial experiments.
  4. Identify the phases of microbial growth and key metabolic pathways.
  5. Explain the processes of bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and translation.
  6. Assess mechanisms of pathogenicity and host defense.
  7. Interpret epidemiological and public health microbiology data.
  8. Critically evaluate case studies on human diseases.
