CHM 132 Organic and Biochemistry Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4 This course provides a survey of major functional classes of compounds in organic and biochemistry. Topics include structure, properties, and reactions of the major organic and biological molecules and basic principles of metabolism. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of fundamental chemical concepts needed to pursue studies in related professional fields.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Natural Science.
Pre-requisite(s): Take one set:
Set 1: CHM 131 and CHM 131A

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Identify the most common organic functional groups and their influence on the chemical and physical properties of organic compounds
- Use IUPAC nomenclature to name organic compounds.
- Describe the classes of organic molecules that are important in human metabolism.
- Predict the outcomes of chemical processes such as oxidation, reduction, and combustion based on the properties of functional groups.
- Describe the structure, function, and properties of biological macromolecules.
- Apply concepts from general, organic, and biochemistry to real-world issues and laboratory experiments.
