EDU 145 Child Development II Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course includes the theories of child development, observation and assessment, milestones, and factors that influence development, from preschool through middle childhood. Emphasis is placed on knowledge, observation and assessment of developmental sequences in approaches to play/learning, emotional/social, health/physical, language/communication and cognitive domains. Upon completion, students should be able to compare/contrast typical/atypical developmental characteristics, explain biological and environmental factors that impact development, and identify evidence-based strategies for enhancing development for children that are culturally, linguistically, and ability diverse.
This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.
Course is typically offered in Spring Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Explain the impact of biological and environmental factors on child development, including genetics, family dynamics, cultural influences, socio-economic status, and environmental exposures.
- Apply theories, research, principles of child development, growth and learning in all domains.
- Identify key indicators of typical and atypical development based on evidence-based observations for children ages preschool to middle school.
- Plan developmentally appropriate experiences, interaction techniques, and environments that are sensitive to and meet the individual needs of children and families.
