GRD 110 Typography I

Lecture: 2 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the history and mechanics of type and its application to layout and design. Topics include typographic fundamentals, anatomy, measurements, composition, identification, and terminology. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in design application, analysis, specification, and creation of typographic elements.

Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Identify typographic anatomy and characteristics.
  2. Explain the variations in typeface classification and families.
  3. Create assignments using appropriate typefaces and stylistic options.
  4. Manipulate typography using appropriate spacing, emphasis and weight.
  5. Demonstrate effective use of typeface measurement and proportion.
