HIS 227 Native American History

This course surveys the history and cultures of Native Americans from pre-history to the present. Topics include Native American civilizations, relations with Europeans, and the continuing evolution of Native American cultures. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze significant political, socioeconomic and cultural developments among Native Americans.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): ENG-002 or ENG 025
Course is typically offered in Fall (when offered).
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Apply concepts used in the analysis of cultural, intercultural contact, and relations.
Analyze similarities and differences, “pre-contact” Native American culture and life.
Analyze the interactions among various “pre-contact” Native American cultures.
Discuss early contacts between Native American and European groups including the nature and impact of these encounters.
Discuss the erosion and destruction of Native American cultures in the United States to the late nineteenth century.
Analyze twentieth century Native American life in terms of the options of syncretism, separatism, and assimilation.
