HOR 160 Plant Materials I Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course covers identification, culture, characteristics, and use of plants in a sustainable landscape. Emphasis is placed on nomenclature, identification, growth requirements, cultural requirements, soil preferences, and landscape applications. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the proper selection and utilization of plant materials, including natives and invasive plants.
Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Identify trees, shrubs, groundcovers, bulbs, ornamental grasses, turfgrass, and houseplants using morphological characteristics and nomenclature in various landscape settings, with emphasis on preparation for the Certified Plant Professional Exam.
- Analyze plant characteristics, growth requirements, and soil preferences to determine their suitability for landscape applications using reference materials and industry databases.
- Demonstrate plant propagation techniques, including the use of cuttings, soil mixtures, chemicals, and industry tools, in a horticulture lab setting to reinforce skills needed for the Certified Plant Professional Exam.
