HOR 166 Soils & Fertilizers Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course covers the physical and chemical properties of soils and soil fertility and management. Topics include soil formation; classification; physical, chemical, and biological properties (including microorganisms); testing; and fertilizer application. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze, evaluate, and properly amend soils/media according to sustainable practices.
Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Identify at 85%% accuracy, fertilizer, fertilizer elements, and lime as they are used in the horticulture industry.
- Research and write a written report on soil characteristics detailing their importance to turfgrass growth and development.
- Apply fertilizer on test turf in the landscape lab on the Jamestown Campus with accurate measurement and application of at least 85%.
