HSE 123 Interviewing Techniques for Human Services

Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course covers the purpose, structure, focus, and techniques utilized in effective interviewing. Emphasis is placed on observing, attending, listening, responding, summarizing, and documenting with instructor supervision. Upon completion, students should be able to perform the basic interviewing skills needed to facilitate the helping relationship.

Pre-requisite(s): HSE 110   and PSY 150  .
Course is typically offered in Spring
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate effective interviewing techniques during classroom activities.
  2. Select effective interviewing techniques with which to respond to classroom role plays according to the grading rubric.
  3. Explain how multicultural factors influence the interviewing process during classroom activities according to the grading rubric.
  4. Evaluate the readiness of the client and significant others to participate in treatment in case studies.
  5. Develop constructive therapeutic responses when the client’s behavior is inconsistent with stated recovery goals.
