HUM 121 The Nature of America

This course provides an interdisciplinary survey of the American cultural, social, and political experience. Emphasis is placed on the multicultural character of American society, distinctive qualities of various regions, and the American political system. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze significant cultural, social, and political aspects of American life.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Humanities/Fine Arts.

Pre-requisite(s): ENG-002 or ENG 025
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring (when offered).
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Evaluate the nation’s founding documents and relevant current political controversies.
Compare how various ethnic groups have contributed to creating today’s America.
Compare how every ethnic group has overcome significant difficulties in its transition to America.
Analyze the value of assimilation in terms of multiculturalism and diversity.
Define the American Dream and its changes over past centuries and decades.
Apply perceived key characteristics of Americans and North Carolinians in assigned discussion forums.
