LEX 130 Civil Injuries Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course covers traditional tort concepts and the evolving body of individual rights created by statute. Topics include intentional and non-intentional torts with emphasis on negligence, strict liability, civil rights, workplace and environmental liability, remedies, and damages. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize, explain, and evaluate elements of civil injuries and related defenses.
Pre-requisite(s): LEX 120. Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Apply traditional intentional tort concepts by submission of briefs of seminal appellate court opinions.
- Demonstrate through written examination the application of the elements of a cause of action for Negligence including professional malpractice liability.
- Defend a charge of Negligence using appellate court opinions and submission of briefs.
- Evaluate a Product Liability case, including Class Actions, as well as Strict Liability, Vicarious Liability and Joint Liability using appellate court opinions and submission of briefs.
- Apply the appropriate body of law in an assigned subject area through in class role play exercises.
- Apply the appropriate defenses to a civil injuries claim through the use of class role play.
