LEX 160 Criminal Law and Procedure

Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces substantive criminal law and procedural rights of the accused. Topics include elements of state/federal crimes, defenses, constitutional issues, pre-trial and trial process, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to explain elements of specific crimes and assist an attorney in preparing a criminal case.

Pre-requisite(s): LEX 120.  
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for arrest through written examination.
  2. Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for indictment through written examination.
  3. Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for pre-trial motions through written examination.
  4. Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for criminal misdemeanor through written examination.
  5. Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for felony trials through written examination.
  6. Provide effective assistance for an attorney in a role play criminal trial.
  7. Develop an appropriate defense for a client’s claim in a role play exercise.
