LEX 160 Criminal Law and Procedure Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course introduces substantive criminal law and procedural rights of the accused. Topics include elements of state/federal crimes, defenses, constitutional issues, pre-trial and trial process, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to explain elements of specific crimes and assist an attorney in preparing a criminal case.
Pre-requisite(s): LEX 120. Course is typically offered in Fall. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for arrest through written examination.
- Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for indictment through written examination.
- Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for pre-trial motions through written examination.
- Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for criminal misdemeanor through written examination.
- Demonstrate the criminal court procedure for felony trials through written examination.
- Provide effective assistance for an attorney in a role play criminal trial.
- Develop an appropriate defense for a client’s claim in a role play exercise.
