LEX 280 Ethics and Professionalism

Lecture: 2 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2
This course reinforces legal ethics and the role of the paralegal in a professional work environment. Topics include a review of ethics, employment opportunities, and search techniques; paralegal certification and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to understand the paralegal’s role in the ethical practice of law.

Co-requisite(s): LEX 120.  
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Apply the regulations of the practice of law to issues faced by paralegals using case briefs and memoranda of law.
  2. Apply laws respecting the unauthorized practice of law to issues faced by paralegals using case briefs and memoranda of law.
  3. Apply the N.C. Rules of Professional Conduct to resolve ethical issues faced by paralegals in the practice of law.
  4. Demonstrate the standards for N.C. Certified Paralegal by memoranda of law.
  5. Demonstrate legal writing and Bluebook citation skills using case briefs and legal memoranda.
