MED 114 Professional Interaction in Health Care

This course is designed to identify various patient behaviors encountered in the medical setting. Emphasis is placed on stressors related to illness, cultural influences, death and dying, and needs specific to patients. Upon completion, students should be able to utilize appropriate methods of verbal and nonverbal communication with empathy and impartiality.

Pre-requisite(s): Admission in the Medical Assisting program.
Course is typically offered in Fall.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Identify different patient behaviors encountered in the medical setting, including manifestations of stress related to illness, cultural influences, death and dying, and specific patient needs.
  2. Explain the impact of stressors related to illness, cultural influences, death and dying on patient behaviors, emphasizing the relationship between these factors and patient needs.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of various methods of verbal and nonverbal communication in promoting empathy and impartiality when interacting with patients in diverse medical contexts including cultural considerations.
  4. Analyze how cultural influences shape patient behaviors and attitudes towards healthcare, considering the impact of cultural norms, beliefs, and practices on patient provider interactions in diverse cultural contexts.
