MED 130 Administrative Office Procedures I Lecture: 1 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2 This course introduces medical office administrative procedures. Topics include appointment processing, written and oral communications, medical records, patient orientation, and safety. Upon completion, students should be able to perform basic administrative skills within the medical environment.
Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Medical Assisting Program. Course is typically offered in Spring. Course has transfer restrictions - 2 years
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Identify the key steps and components involved in appointment processing within a medical office setting, including scheduling, rescheduling, and cancellation procedures.
- Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills when interacting with patients, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders in a medical office environment.
- Organize accurate and up-to-date medical records, ensuring proper documentation, confidentiality, and compliance with relevant regulations and policies.
- Apply patient orientation techniques, including office policies, patient instructions, and addressing patient concerns, to facilitate a positive and welcoming experience in the medical office.
- Implement appropriate safety measures and protocols within the medical office, which promotes a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Perform basic administrative skills, such as managing appointments, maintaining records, coordinating communications, and ensuring safety, proficiently and efficiently in a medical office setting.
- Demonstrate how cultural factors can influence administrative procedures in medical offices, such as appointment processing, written and oral communications, and patient orientation, while looking for culturally sensitive practices to ensure inclusivity and effective communication with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
