MED 140 Exam Room Procedures I Lecture: 3 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 5 This course provides instruction in clinical examining room procedures. Topics include asepsis, infection control, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, preparation and administration of medications, EKG, vital signs, and medical emergencies. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in exam room procedures.
Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Medical Assisting Program. Course is typically offered in Spring. Course has transfer restrictions - 2 years
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in exam room procedures.
- Identify the principles of asepsis and infection control in the clinical examining room, including proper hand hygiene, sterilization techniques, and personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols.
- Demonstrate proper examination and treatment techniques with positioning patients, and working with minor office surgical procedures.
- Provide clear and culturally sensitive instructions to patients regarding procedures, treatments, and post-care.
- Demonstrate the proper preparation and administration of medications, adhering to proper dosage calculations, medication handling, storage, and administration routes, while emphasizing patient safety and accurate documentation.
- Identify EKG (electrocardiogram) electrode placement accurately.
- Demonstrate the ability to measure, record, and interpret temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory rate accurately, identifying potential abnormalities.
- Report accurate information to the provider to aid in the patient’s overall health status.
- Demonstrate cultural diversity in the clinical examining room, adapting communication and care approaches to address the specific needs, preferences, and cultural beliefs of patients from various cultures.
- Perform basic first aid procedures accurately and safely within the scope of practice for medical emergencies commonly encountered in the medical office setting.
