MED 276 Patient Education

Lecture: 1 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2
This course is designed to provide communication skills, basic education principles, and knowledge of available community resources and to apply this knowledge to the clinical setting. Emphasis is placed on identifying appropriate community resources, developing patient education materials, and perfecting written and oral communication skills. Upon completion, students should be able to instruct, communicate effectively, and act as a liaison between the patient and community agencies.

Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Medical Assisting Program.
Course is typically offered in Spring.

Upon completion, students should be able to instruct, communicate effectively, and act as a liaison between the patient and community agencies.

  1. Summarize key communication skills and basic education principles necessary for effective patient interaction and education in a clinical setting.
  2. Apply knowledge of available community resources to identify and connect patients with appropriate services, considering their specific needs and circumstances.
  3. Create patient education materials, such as brochures, pamphlets, or multimedia resources, that effectively convey important healthcare information and instructions, utilizing clear and culturally sensitive language.
  4. Evaluate the suitability and relevance of various community resources for specific patient populations, considering factors such as accessibility, cultural appropriateness, and affordability.
  5. Explain the global perspective of healthcare communication, education, and community resources, considering cultural variations in communication styles, educational practices, and the availability and accessibility of resources in different countries and regions.
  6. Apply the knowledge and skills gained in the course to engage in a service-learning activity that involves utilizing communication skills, education principles, and community resources to contribute to a project or initiative of personal interest within the local community.
