SAB 135 Addictive Process

This course explores the physical, emotional, psychological, and cultural aspects of the addictive process. Emphasis is placed on disorders related to addictions to alcohol, drugs, food, sex, work, gambling, internet, and relationships. Upon completion, students should be able to identify the effects, prevention strategies, and treatment methods associated with addictive disorders.

At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Examine a variety of models and theories of addiction and other substance-related problems.
Evaluate the value of an interdisciplinary approach to addiction treatment.
Describe the need to adapt practice to the range of treatment settings and modalities.
Identify common medical and pharmaceutical resources in the treatment of addictive disease and other substance-related disorders.
Design culturally relevant formal and informal education programs that raise awareness and support substance abuse prevention and/or the recovery process.
Describe principles and philosophies of prevention, treatment, relapse, and recovery.
Summarize the health and behavioral problems related to the treatment of addiction, including transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, TB, STDs, and other communicable diseases.
