HIT 110 Introduction to Healthcare and HIM

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces healthcare settings and the Health Information Management (HIM) professional’s role in healthcare delivery systems. Topics include health information management operations in compliance with standards, regulations and accrediting body initiatives; healthcare providers and disciplines; and electronic health records (EHRs). Upon completion, student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of health information management and healthcare organizations,professions and trends.

Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Describe the history and evolution of the health information profession.
  2. Analyze the following aspects of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): mission, membership, structure, operations, ethics, accreditation, and certification.
  3. Discuss the standardization of medical care, the impact of regulations on healthcare delivery in the United States, and organization and operations of hospitals, and other healthcare delivery settings.
  4. Describe the functions, purposes, formats, users, content, and structure of a health record.
  5. Introduce health information management concepts common to allied health professionals.
  6. Describe types of patient records, including documentation issues associated with each.
  7. Apply health data management practices.
  8. Explain the basic concepts of biomedical research.
  9. Explain the importance and fiscal advantages of quality management.
