GRO 150 Aging and Addiction

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3


This course introduces methods to prevent and reduce addiction within the older adult population. Emphasis is placed on understanding problems associated with various addictions in addition to signs, symptoms, and treatment options. Upon completion, the student should be able to describe how addiction impacts the quality of life for the older adult population.

At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Distinguish unique ways signs and symptoms of substance use disorder manifest in older adults.
  2. Describe the process, progression, treatment, and recovery from substance misuse in older adults.
  3. Describe prevention and intervention strategies which improve social functioning and overall wellness in older adults.
  4. Explain the interaction between substance use disorders, dementia, and other cognitive disorders.
  5. Summarize substance misuse and co-morbidity.
