FRE 111 Elementary French I

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the fundamental elements of the French language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to spoken and written French and demonstrate cultural awareness. This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Humanities/Fine Arts.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following, with 60% accuracy (for programs) or 70% accuracy (for college transfer):  

  1. Read short paragraphs in French.
  2. Identify aspects of everyday life in the Francophone world.
  3. Evaluate short texts and initiate social interactions in French independently.
  4. Relate information on familiar topics in French using the present tense.
  5. Examine aspects of the student’s life and school.
  6. Compose brief paragraphs, independently, on familiar topics in the target language using information received in class or acquired through personal research.
