BTC 285 Cell Culture Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4 This course introduces the theory and practices required to successfully initiate and maintain plant or animal cell cultures. Topics include aseptic techniques, the growth environment, routine maintenance of cell cultures, specialized culture techniques, and various applications. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to grow, maintain, and manipulate cells in culture.
Pre-requisite(s): Course is typically offered in Spring Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Upon completion of the course, students should be able to do the following:
- Apply aseptic techniques to prevent contamination in cell culture processes.
- Describe key factors in the growth environment to support the initiation and maintenance of cell cultures.
- Demonstrate subculture and passage to maintain health of cell cultures.
- Apply specialized techniques to meet the needs of specific cell culture applications while ensuring proper experimental controls.
- Examine common problems encountered in cell culture.
