HSE 223 Counseling Theories and Skills

This course provides an in-depth exploration of foundational theories and practical techniques essential for those working in diverse human services settings. Emphasis is placed on self-awareness, problem solving, decision making, and personal growth. Upon completion, students should be able to apply these theories to real-life scenarios, and develop professional skills crucial for fostering supportive relationships in various settings.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to do the following:

  1. Implement agency-specific policies and procedures for managing crises and dangerous situations, including applying safety measures to protect clients and staff.
  2. Demonstrate effective rapport-building techniques to establish trust and assess the need for additional professional assistance in crisis situations.
  3. Construct with the client and others, as appropriate, an initial action plan based on needs, preferences, and available resources.
  4. Adapt crisis counseling strategies to the individual characteristics of the client, including (but not limited to): disability, gender, sexual orientation, developmental level, acculturation, ethnicity, age, and health status.
  5. Describe the variety of insurance and health maintenance options available and the importance of helping clients access those benefits.
  6. Formulate intervention strategies based on indicators that a crisis may occur.
