The Medical Office Administration-General AAS is designed for individuals seeking customer service-related positions in medical and dental offices, hospitals, and insurance companies. Students will develop skills to effectively interact with patients and other customers in a healthcare setting. Additionally, students develop skills in medical terminology, document editing and formatting, keyboarding, MS Office applications, office-related mathematical computations, office procedures, medical legal and ethical issues, and electronic health records. Coursework also includes enhancement of employability skills, i.e., verbal and written communication, critical thinking, team building; and problem solving.

Position titles students may find include (but not limited to):

  • Appointment Scheduler or Patient Coordinator/Scheduling
  • Front Desk Checkout
  • Patient Access Advocate or Patient Access Specialist
  • Medical Office Administrative Assistant

This degree can be completed in a traditional, hybrid, or completely online format. 

Program Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the Medical Office Administration–General degree, the graduate should be able to:

  • Use various software to complete business tasks.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Use and manage medical office records accurately.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative and ethical manner.

Courses in this program prepare the student for the Microsoft Office User Specialist Exams.  Students will be required to purchase a voucher for these exams as part of the required course materials for each course in the program.  Individual exams will be administered at the end of each of the individual courses.  When a voucher is required for a particular course, it will be identified on the syllabus and in prominent locations such as Canvas and the GTCC bookstore.
