COM 130 Nonverbal Communication

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the contemporary study of nonverbal communication in daily life. Topics include haptics, kinesics, proxemics, facial displays, and appearance. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze/interpret nonverbal communication and demonstrate greater awareness of their own nonverbal communication habits.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): COM 110  or COM 120.  
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Determine what constitutes effective nonverbal sending and receiving of signals.
  2. Analyze the positive and negative effects of environment upon human communication.
  3. Analyze the positive and negative effects of territory and personal space on human communication.
  4. Analyze the positive and negative effects of physical characteristics on human communication.
  5. Analyze the positive and negative effects of gestures and posture on human communication.
  6. Analyze the positive and negative effects of touch on human communication.
  7. Analyze the positive and negative effects of the face on human communication.
  8. Analyze the positive and negative effects of eye behavior on human communication.
  9. Analyze the positive and negative effects of vocal cues that accompany spoken words.
