LEX 140 Civil Litigation I

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces the structure of the legal system and the rules governing civil litigation. Topics include jurisdiction state and federal rules of civil procedure and evidence. Upon completion, students should be able to assist an attorney in pre-litigation matters and preparation of pleadings and motions.

Co-requisite(s): LEX 120 
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate state and federal subject matter and personal jurisdiction by drafting, filing and serving pleadings and motions.
  2. Demonstrate the application of the N.C. Rules of Evidence in a legal memorandum, and by drafting pleadings and motions.
  3. Demonstrate the application to a fact pattern of the N.C. Rules of Civil Procedure, N.C. Rules of Practice, and 18th Judicial District Local Rules by drafting, filing and serving pleadings and motions.
  4. Demonstrate the procedure for locating and completing civil litigation support documents online from the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts by drafting, filing and serving pleadings and motions.
  5. Demonstrate the procedure for filing pleadings and motions, and the associated documents, with the correct governmental agency by drafting, filing and serving pleadings and motions.
