LEX 214 Investigation & Trial Preparation Lecture: 1 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course introduces the fundamentals of investigation. Topics include compiling/assembling data for cases; investigative planning/information gathering techniques; locating/interviewing witnesses; collection/preserving/evaluating sufficiency/admissibility of evidence; preparation of reports; and evidence presentation at depositions/court proceeding. Upon completion, students should be able to plan/use investigative checklists, understand/demonstrate investigative techniques, prepare reports, and enhance verbal and interpersonal communications skills and interviewing techniques.
Pre-requisite(s): LEX 120. Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring (when offered). Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Determine the necessary investigation techniques required when given a set of legal facts.
- Categorize investigation techniques accepted by courts when given various fact patterns.
- Compose as admissible document for use in a legal proceeding by using information provided in role play scenario.
- Establish requirements for witness interviewing in a role play exercise.
- Evaluate the relationship between evidence collections, trial preparation and courtroom strategy.
- Simulate a witness interview in a role play scenario.
