MUS 214 Electronic Music I

Lecture: 1 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 2
This course provides an opportunity to study and explore various electronic instruments and devices. Emphasis is placed on fundamental MIDI applications and implementation, features and application of sequences, sound modules, digital keyboards, and Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency by creation of appropriate musical projects using the equipment and techniques covered.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): C or better in MUS 111 .
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Explain the development of electronic music.
  2. Analyze terminology related to electronic music technology.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) applications.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency using digital recording and editing software.
  5. Differentiate between various types of: sequencers, samplers, sound modules, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) controllers, electronic keyboards, digital recorders, and software plug-ins.
