MUS 222 Music Theory IV

Lecture: 3 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course is a continuation of studies begun in MUS 221 . Emphasis is placed on continued study of common practice era compositional techniques and forms, 20th century practices, ear-training, and sight-singing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the recognition and application of the above.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Pre-requisite(s): C or better in MUS 221 .
Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring (when offered).
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate analysis of chromaticism through borrowed chords, the Neopolitan chord, augmented sixth chords, and enharmonic spellings.
  2. Demonstrate improvement in common and popular musical structure.
  3. Explore tonal harmony in 20th century practices.
  4. Use musical terms correctly in reading assignments and lectures.
  5. Demonstrate advanced skills in ear-training and sight-singing.
