AST 152 General Astronomy II

This course is a continuation of AST 151 with primary emphasis beyond the solar system. Topics include the sun, stars, galaxies, and the larger universe, including cosmology. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of astronomy.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general education course in Natural Science.

This is a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course.

Co-requisite(s): AST 152A .

At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

Apply the processes by which scientific conclusions are drawn.
Apply techniques used to determine physical and dynamical properties of stars.
Interpret information on a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.
Generalize the properties of the sun to other stars.
Apply principles of stellar evolution to the life of a star.
Develop a model of the Milky Way through interpretation of internal and external observations.
Classify galaxies by type, according to appearance and processes.
Develop a model of the early universe using observational evidence.
