AUT 231 Manual Transmissions/Transaxles/Drive Trains

This course covers the operation, diagnosis, and repair of manual transmissions/transaxles, clutches, driveshafts, axles, and final drives. Topics include theory of torque, power flow, and manual drive train servicing and repair using appropriate service information, tools, and equipment. Upon completion, students should be able to explain operational theory, diagnose and repair manual drive trains.

Pre-requisite(s): TRN 110.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Perform a bleed procedure on a hydraulic clutch system.
Demonstrate the disassembly, cleaning and reassembly of a manual transmission/transaxle.
Diagnose noise concerns using manual transmission/transaxle powerflow principles.
Assemble a synchronizer using hub, sleeve, keys, springs and blocking rings.
Measure driveline angles using appropriate tools and service information.
Demonstrate proper disassembly of a differential using appropriate tools and service information.
Assemble a differential to manufacturers specifications using appropriate tools and service information. (This would include selecting shims to set proper bearing preload, backlash and tooth contact)
Complete proper disassembly of a transfer case using appropriate tools and service information.
Assemble transfer case to manufacturers specifications using appropriate tools and service information.
