AVI 250 Powerplant Maintenance II

Lecture: 10 Lab: 15 Clinic: 0 Credits: 15
This course emphasizes engine systems and components. Topics include engine instruments and fire protection, electrical, lubrication, fuel, ignition, starting, and fuel metering systems. Students completing this course should be capable of passing appropriate portions of the FAA knowledge, oral, and practical tests for the powerplant rating.

Pre-requisite(s): AVI 110 .
Course is typically offered in Summer (AVI-250AB); Fall and Spring (AVI-250BB).
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Remove, inspect and troubleshoot various engine instrument monitoring systems.
  2. Identify, inspect and troubleshoot various engine fire protection systems.
  3. Using applicable diagrams and tools, troubleshoot and repair instructor identified systems.
  4. Inspect engine oil filters and or screens.
  5. Interpret Federal Aviation Regulations pertaining to fuel systems.
  6. Describe normal and emergency ignition system operation.
  7. Identify components of an engine fuel system.
  8. Disassemble, reassemble and test a reciprocating engine magneto.
  9. Inspect, service, troubleshoot and repair reciprocating engine ignition systems and components.
  10. Inspect, service, troubleshoot, and repair turbine engine ignition systems and components.
  11. Identify causes for turbine engine performance loss.
  12. Remove and install a fuel nozzle in a turbine engine.
  13. Inspect, service, and troubleshoot reciprocating and turbine engine fuel metering systems.
  14. Disassemble, reassemble and identify carburetors.
  15. Repair Engine Fuel Metering components.
  16. Locate adjustment procedures for a turbine engine fuel control unit.
