ELC 117 Motors and Controls

Lecture: 2 Lab: 6 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of motors and motor controls. Topics include ladder diagrams, pilot devices, contactors, motor starters, motors, and other control devices. Upon completion, students should be able to properly select, connect, and troubleshoot motors and control circuits.

Pre-requisite(s): ELC 112  , ELC 131   or AHR 111  .
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Interpret schematic diagrams and symbols to troubleshoot motor control circuits.
  2. Install motor control systems in accordance with industry standards and safety protocols.
  3. Operate control devices such as relays, contactors, and motor starters to ensure proper functionality.
  4. Select appropriate motor control components based on system requirements and National Electrical Code (NEC) guidelines.
  5. Design basic motor control circuits using ladder diagrams and standard control components.
