MED 240 Exam Room Procedures II Lecture: 3 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 5 This course is designed to expand and build upon skills presented in MED 140. Emphasis is placed on advanced exam room procedures. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate enhanced competence in selected exam room procedures.
Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Medical Assisting Program and MED 140 . Course is typically offered in Fall. Course has transfer restrictions - 2 years
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Evaluate the importance of patient education in the clinical examining room, emphasizing the healthcare professional’s role in providing clear and culturally sensitive instructions to patients regarding procedures, treatments, and post-care.
- Demonstrate medication preparation and administration with proficiency, encompassing proper dosage calculations, medication handling, storage, and administration routes, while prioritizing patient safety and accurate documentation.
- Conduct EKG (electrocardiogram) procedures accurately, adhering to standardized protocols for electrode placement, recording, and interpretation.
- Identify common abnormalities and artifacts in EKG tracings.
- Adapt communication and care approach in the clinical examining room to address the specific needs, preferences, and cultural beliefs of patients from various cultures.
- Perform accurate respiratory tests using standard protocols, including spirometry and peak flow assessments and instruction for patients about normal and abnormal values.
