SUR 110 Introduction to Surgical Technology

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course provides a comprehensive study of peri-operative care, patient care concepts, and professional practice concepts within the profession of surgical technology. Topics include: introductory concepts, organizational structure and relationships, legal, ethical and moral issues, medical terminology, pharmacology, anesthesia, wound healing management concepts, and the technological sciences. Upon completion, students should be able to apply theoretical knowledge of the course topics to the practice of surgical technology.

Co-requisite(s): BIO 163 MED 120  and SUR 111 .
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Explain professional ethics and behaviors essential to safe, effective perioperative practice based on the roles of surgical technologists.
  2. Evaluate operating room risks, including negligence, based on common items and room design.
  3. Differentiate uses and components of surgical instruments, including electrosurgery equipment, by analyzing their design and function.
  4. Distinguish between disinfection and sterilization methods.
  5. Differentiate commonly used imaging studies.
  6. Explain the surgical technologist’s role during general and regional anesthesia procedures (induction, maintenance, and emergence).
  7. Demonstrate effective communication strategies within the surgical team by applying specific techniques to improve collaboration and patient outcomes in both the operating room and the Postanesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  8. Apply human care models-specifically, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Kübler-Ross’s stages of dying-to develop care plans that address the emotional and physical needs of surgical patients.
