SUR 111 Periop Patient Care

Lecture: 5 Lab: 6 Clinic: 0 Credits: 7
This course provides the surgical technology student the theoretical knowledge required to function in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative role. Topics include asepsis, disinfection and sterilization, physical environment, instrumentation, equipment, peri-operative patient care, and peri-operative case management. Upon completion, students should be able to apply the principles and practice of the peri-operative team member to the operative environment.

Co-requisite(s): SUR 110 .
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate a surgical conscience by applying the principles of asepsis and infection control to optimize perioperative patient care.
  2. Justify selection of appropriate surgical instruments for specific surgical cases by analyzing tissue type, design, and function.
  3. Demonstrate safe and accurate handling and passing of instruments in simulated operative settings.
  4. Demonstrate the responsibilities of sterile and non-sterile surgical team members.
  5. Integrate pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative practices during lab skills check-offs.
