HIT 112 Health Law and Ethics

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course covers the study of the judicial, legislative, and regulatory standards applicable to health care and health information processes. Topics include legal terminology, Confidentiality, privacy, security, access and disclosure of health information, ethical implications, data stewardship, and the integrity of the legal health record. Upon Completion, students should be able to apply policies, procedures and ethical standards in compliance with external forces.

Pre-requisite(s): Grade of C or better in HIT 110 .
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Examine various professional-related and practice-related ethical issues.
  2. Evaluate standard healthcare policies and protocols.
  3. Apply policies and procedures for access and disclosure of Protected Health Information.
  4. Evaluate various policies and procedures related to release of healthcare information.
  5. Apply confidentiality protocols to various healthcare-related scenarios.
  6. Analyze various ethical policies and issues using healthcare-related legal terminology.
