HIT 217 Quality & Data Analysis

Lecture: 2 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3


This course covers the principles of quality assessment and improvement, including data analysis and decision making in healthcare. Topics include healthcare statistics, continuous quality improvement, data analysis and reporting techniques, quality and outcome metric monitoring. Upon completion, students should be able to compute healthcare statistics, abstract, analyze and report clinical data for organization-wide quality and performance improvement programs for compliance purposes.

Pre-requisite(s): MAT 152  with a grade of C or better.
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Domain I. Data Structure, Content, and Information Governance

     1. Assess the policies, procedures, and standards of healthcare accreditation bodies, government agencies, and other external forces impacting healthcare delivery. (I.1).

     2. Evaluate health information secondary data sources and basic data sets used in in healthcare facilities. (I.3)(I.6)

Domain III. Informatics, Analytics, and Data Use

     3. Apply database tools used to manage health information. (III.1).

     4. Abstract data from clinical indices, databases, and registries for maintenance. (III.1)

     5. Calculate inpatient and outpatient services statistics. (III.3)

Domain IV. Revenue Cycle Management

     6. Apply the APC and MS-DRG reimbursement methodologies used by CMS. (IV.3).

Domain VI. Organizational Management & Leadership  

     7. Interpret the organizational structure, mission, and vision of the healthcare facility.   (VI.1).  

     8. Use health information department continuous quality improvement tools and techniques. (VI.4).
