AVI 260 Powerplant Maintenance III

Lecture: 5 Lab: 12 Clinic: 0 Credits: 9
This course covers powerplant systems, components, and culminates in engine system inspection. Emphasis is placed on engine inspection, reciprocating engine induction and cooling systems, engine exhaust and reverser systems, turbine engine air systems and propellers. Upon completion, students should be prepared to pass the applicable portions of the knowledge, oral, and practical tests of the airframe rating for the FAA mechanic’s powerplant certificate.

Pre-requisite(s): AVI 110  
Course is typically offered in Fall and Summer.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Apply inspection requirements for engine systems under 14 CFR part 43 and 14 CFR 91 for airworthiness directives, service bulletins, TCDS, service bulletins, and all applicable instructions for continued airworthiness.
  2. Inspect components and operation of engine induction and cooling systems for reciprocating aircraft engines.
  3. Inspect components and operation of turbine engine air systems. 
  4. Inspect components and operation of engine exhaust and reverser systems for both turbine and reciprocating engines to include procedures for testing and troubleshooting. 
  5. Test propellers and propeller control systems to include pitch control, servicing and maintenance, removal and installation, synchronization systems, and ice prevention systems to include inspection requirements.
