CEG 211 Hydrololgy & Erosion Control

Lecture: 2 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces basic engineering principles and characteristics of hydrology, erosion and sediment control. Topics include stormwater runoff, gravity pipe flow, open channel flow, low impact development (LID), erosion control devices and practices. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze and design gravitational drainage structures, identify LID and erosion control elements, and prepare a stormwater drainage plan.

Pre-requisite(s): Take One Set:  Set 1: DMA-060, DMA-070, and DMA-080, Set 2: DMA-065, Set 3: MAT-121, Set 4: MAT-171, Set 5: MAT-003, Set 6: BSP-4003
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Analyze watershed characteristics and hydrologic processes.
  2. Estimate stormwater runoff rates and volumes using standard hydrologic methods, including the Rational Method and NRCS TR-55.
  3. Design basic gravity-driven storm drainage systems, including pipes and open channels.
  4. Apply applicable codes, standards, and best management practices (BMPs) to select appropriate erosion and sediment control measures.
  5. Evaluate Low Impact Development (LID) practices in sustainable site development and stormwater management.
  6. Prepare a basic stormwater drainage plan that incorporates hydrologic analysis, drainage design, and erosion and sediment control elements.
