DRA 120 Voice for Performance

Lecture: 3 Lab: 0 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course provides guided practice in the proper production of speech for the theatre. Emphasis is placed on improving speech, including breathing, articulation, pronunciation, and other vocal variables. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate effective theatrical speech.

This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Course is typically offered in Fall and Spring.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the following:

  1. Address personal vocal challenges by applying principles from Linklater’s Freeing the Natural Voice.
  2. Demonstrate diaphragmatic breathing, clear articulation, and vocal resonance through exercises and performances.
  3. Utilize the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as a tool for accurate pronunciation and dialect work.
  4. Develop a personal 15-minute vocal warm-up incorporating breath, resonance, articulation, and relaxation techniques.
  5. Apply the vocal resonation ladder to enhance vocal range, expressiveness, and connection to text.
